High School Portfolio
The following works are from my HS portfolio used for college applications.
The entire portfolio is centered in a theme of 'The Movement of Civilization and Time'.

'Who Wants to Live Forever?'
This work is an excerpt from the sketchbook.
The figure in the piece is a person fighting for democracy and freedom; the entire figure was drawn in a single line.
Drawing in a single line is something I have been doing on my sketchbook recently and I enjoy it.
It requires thinking ahead and helps me visualize clearly what I plan to draw ahead.

'Defy Time'
'Defy Time'
I wanted to show the transition of time through individual string strands.
The thick area was done using multiple layers of string.
The direction of the basketball player shifts depending on the angle of the view.
Therefore an external factor outside of the artwork itself, which is shadow for this piece, is incorporated.

'Stance on Architecture'
'Stance on Architecture'
This work combines an essay I wrote on 'Good architecture' from an anthropological perspective with sketches of buildings I admire and abhor.
The essay discusses a transition of the purpose or architecture as humans progress forward; the buildings I sketched share a common identity of being 'repurposed'.
The Musée d'Orsay from a train station into a museum, the Beijing Olympics Swimming stadium from an international competition stadium to a site for training young athletes and so on.

'Evolution'
This shows a human gradually evolving into a chair.
As technologies develop humans enjoy increased comfort in daily life, but that can sometimes take away the joy of manually doing something.
This leads to the increasing popularity of the retro theme, such as film photography or vinyl.
The human evolves into a still life figure, a chair, that does not move or think. It has become merely a tool.
The chair design was inspired from an exhibition of Karim Rashid's designs I visited.

'Nude Sketch Work'
3-minute conté croquis.

'Meat Market 2017 S/S'
This work challenges the current fashion industry paradigm of lucrative and luxurious branding.
A meat market, despite being considered a 'low' place in society's standards of today, is the closest place that shows the original brutal nature of humans: survival. The workers and the animals at the meat market are emphasized.
These characters are the ones that are moving the meat market.

'La Clairvoyance 2016'
Adapted from Rene Magritte's 'La Clairvoyance', this work depicts the current controversy over media.
The cat, being a reporter, is looking at an event. However what the camera shows on the canvas is different from what is happening.
The cat is tied with ropes, or an external force.
The original 'La Clairvoyance' showed an egg and a bird. La Clairvoyance 2016 shows the current media's manipulation of a story, transitioning it into something more radical.
The cat was used to portray the reporter because cats cannot see color; everything they see is grey, hence the grey area the media strives to reach.

'Still Objects'
This work takes a different approach to still objects.
The background is fully covered with small dots in colored pencils to create a light tone while having strong details.
The colors used for the objects show contrast and brightness.

'Rooster At Sunrise'
When Korea suffered under dictatorship in the latter half of the 20th century, many leaders congregated together to fight back and win democracy.
One of them was now passed-away former president Kim Young-Sam, who left an infamous quote: "Even if they kill the rooster, the sun will still rise." Roosters served as animals that will cry when the sun rose in the morning.
Young-Sam meant the sun as a better future, or tomorrow.
Adapted from this quote, this piece pays homage to those who fought for Korea's freedom and throws a message to the tyrants still existing in this world.
No matter how they try to suppress their people and gain power, they will always fail- and justice will prevail in the long run.

'Time and Sound and History'
This work shows the development of Korean civilizations through the motions of light and sound.
The monochrome and bland traditional color palette of ancient Korea is contrasted by the now vibrant and diverse culture of modern Korea.
Sound and light play a crucial role in connecting the past and present as they remain the foundation of our society upon which all new developments are built.

'Collage Denim Jacket'
This work started from a question 'What if we had to suffice from past materials as time went on?'.
The future generation's definition of steampunk is portrayed here.
Some seams of the coat were attached with thin wires, and all fabric came from old, unworn jeans.
The reflective tape was added for a post-apocalyptic mood, as well as to throw a question between fashion-wear and workwear.
Since denim was first born from workwear, its gradual transition over to fashion-wear shows how things serve different purposes over time.

'Steampunk Musketeers'
The steampunk aesthetic is a prime example of correlation between time and space.
The idea of technology remaining the same over a span of time shows how quickly technology has developed.
The animals are adapted from the film 'Porco Rosso' by Miyazaki Hayao.

'Our Great Dictator'
This work portrays dictatorship propaganda in a satirical way.
The 'dictator' in the print is a compilation of great and horrible historical figures: the facial expression of Albert Einstein, head shape of Vladimir Lenin, nose of Kim Il Sung and so on.
Dictatorial nations create and distribute propaganda extremely quickly, so the print method is apt for portraying such an image.
The title is adapted from Charlie Chaplin's 'Our Great Dictator', one of my favorite films.

'Shoe Histology'
The materials used in this shoe model shows the progression of time.
Different materials were used to create footwear in history.
Metal was used during the medieval era for wars. Tightly packed paper is used for pointe shoes of ballet dancers.
Nowadays the range of materials are very wide, ranging from neoprene to layered plastic fuses.

'Shards'
This collage shows the various personalities of a human.
There are various portions where some aspects are emphasized: the 'dark' mind and gloomy mood contrasted with the 'soft' and flowery, lively mood for example.
The wall shows a grey cover of different emotions, trying to look indifferent despite having various personalities.

'Hidden Figures'
With gender equality being such an important issue that is discussed in modern society, I was propelled to make a work that shed light on one of the most influential women in history- Marie Curie.
The hand represents the oppressing forces in society at that time.
Heads of small figures of people are stuck in the hand, which represents the people at the time who neglected Curie.
The book that stops Curie from being pressed down is her notebook, her studies and her passion that enlightened future generations.

'Strike!'
As humanity has grown a society where people are divided into groups naturally formed.
Whether it be race, wealth or amount of power, a rank system gradually developed.
However, some cases took this system to the extreme to the point where some groups were not being treated like a human being; discrimination, oppression and hatred was and is spread throughout the world.
This piece shows two workers fighting for their rights to be treated as humans, while an unknown force is pressuring them to stay quiet and adhere to the 'norms' they created.
However, the workers' facial expressions seem to be reluctant to this force. They will continue fighting to restore their conditions to what is truly 'normal'.

'Camera Man'
This work is a little bit taller than my height, and it was done to represent my hobby of taking pictures of my high school life.
The body is composed of old camera parts to show my love for film photography.
The photos falling in the background are watercolor renderings of actual film photos I took of my school, my friends and student life.

THESIS: Theme 'Threshold'
1. An Absolute Threshold: Time
2. A Relative Threshold: Emotion
I interpreted the word ‘threshold’ as an invisible line that humans cross, causing a change. Whether it be the bottom of a doorway or a certain level that needs to be exceeded for a change to occur, the subject that crosses the threshold changes physically and mentally. The surrounding environment also changes once a threshold is passed.
I thought that a threshold can be either absolute or relative in its nature. This means that in an absolute threshold, we must cross it and change. In a relative threshold, we cross the line to show something that we believe has changed in us, but others do not view it as a change.
Based on this thought I applied the absolute threshold to the aging of a man. I combined this idea with William Shakespeare’s poem ‘The Seven Stages of Man’, an excerpt from the play As You Like It. I created a painting that resembles a book cover with text and drawing to shape it like a book from the Victorian age. I added hints of an absolute threshold by inserting the Sun, Moon and the rings of Saturn. In the medieval era scientists and philosophers believed most physical phenomena were due to either the way of nature or divine intervention, and I tried to depict that in the most straightforward way.
I interpreted the relative threshold by connecting it with our emotion. Many people who are depressed try to act normal, but society nearly forces them to act normal. I wanted to depict this by placing a rag with mixed colors -symbolizing mixed emotions-being forcefully squeezed by dull-colored machines. The water droplets that fall from what was once a colorful, dirty rag are clear and fresh, which are the emotions these people are forced to show to the public.
I have various ideas to present the word ‘threshold’ in different directions.
First, I believe my interest in anthropology and history can be connected to this subject. When I was first organizing ideas for this assignment I thought of using the word in the context of a breakthrough or discovery, which was usually how the word is used. However, I would like to approach that term from an anthropological perspective. I would illustrate historic figures who helped humanity progress forward and cross a threshold by scientific discoveries or fighting for human rights. There have been numerous instances where an invention or breakthrough sparked the way for humans to rapidly develop in some way. An example would be the smartphone. Since its invention, technology has progressed faster than ever before in the past decade.
Another aspect of a threshold is its nature of dividing two parties. The two parties are usually significantly different from each other. I did not adapt this concept initially because I thought it was too basic of an approach. I thought that depicting two parties that are different from each other, or someone that is isolated from everyone else would be too common.
In my opinion, the division of two parties can be easily found in our present. I thought of how voting can be a way to either bring people together or divide them. One of my ideas was to set up a voting booth where the viewers could physically cast a vote on an idea. The booth will be suspended in a higher floor where viewers can actually cast ballots on a variety of issues. When they vote, the ballots would split and fall down into two environments. The two environments would represent the outcomes of the vote, and a threshold would be created.
I believe the division of two parties can cause drastic psychological changes as well. If a certain party is put in a superior position compared to the other they almost always try to take advantage in the situation. I would combine this thought with two actual experiments done I n the past I find extremely interesting, the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram Experiment. These two experiments shared what I would call a ‘chain of superiority’ each divided in a threshold. In the Stanford Prison Experiment, the right of decision-making traveled from Professor Philip Zimbardo and his staff, to the student correctional officers, to the student prisoners. In the Milgram experiment the right traveled from the ‘experimenter’, the ‘teacher’ and to the ‘student’. The threshold generated from a difference in class or social preference led to create shocking results. Likewise, I would like to take a new approach by drawing a threshold that divides a group of people by class and position, which generates superiority or inferiority.
Lastly, a new direction I could take with the word ‘threshold’ would be related to my personal experience. I have been selected to volunteer at the winter Olympic and Paralympic games that will be hosted at my home country in South Korea in less than a month, and I am extremely excited to help with the press and translate for visitors and journalists. Ever since I was selected and went through the training process I always have thought this will be a memorable event in my life where I witness the world coming together. It’s a threshold that broadens my view to the global level, and a threshold that I will cross to meet new people, gain knowledge and experience something new. Other than that, this year itself is a threshold for me as I am graduating from high school and enter ‘adulthood’. I am unsure if I am ready yet, but I anticipate what lies ahead for me this year. This future I anticipate can be a direction I take with the topic ‘threshold’.
